YouTube has a popular plan called YouTube Premium that lets you watch videos without ads, download them to watch offline, play videos in the background, and listen to music on YouTube Music. Now, Google is introducing a cheaper version called “YouTube Premium Lite” for people who want fewer ads without all the extra features.
The Lite plan focuses on removing ads from “most videos” (like gaming, fashion, beauty, and news), but it doesn’t include music videos, offline downloads, background playback, or access to YouTube Music and YouTube Kids. Basically, it’s a simpler way to enjoy YouTube with fewer interruptions.
It costs $7.99 a month, which is about 40% cheaper than the full Premium plan at $13.99. Right now, it’s starting in the US, with plans to roll out to Thailand, Germany, and Australia soon. Taiwan, which already has the full Premium plan, might get Lite later too.
If you’re annoyed by YouTube ads but don’t need the fancy extras, Premium Lite could be a good fit at a lower price. How well it works will depend on what users say once they try it out!
