Samsung has developed a new chip design of HBM4 (high-bandwidth memory), which is based on 4nm technology. This chip will improve memory performance and energy efficiency as well as adopt 10nm process for DRAM production. The company plans to regain its previous HBM3E position in the market through HBM4 technology.

According to a report by South Korea’s leading news agency Chosun Ilbo, Samsung’s memory business unit has completed the design of the HBM4 logic chip. Along with this, the company’s foundry unit has also started trial production based on 4nm technology. After the final performance verification, Samsung will make HBM4 samples available in the market.

Importance of HBM4:
The “logic chip” or “basic die” has been given an important role in the HBM4 chip. It is the main part of the memory stack, which controls multi-layer DRAM chips. The number of I/O pins has been doubled in the HBM4 generation, adding more functionality.

Technical challenges and solutions:
The biggest challenge for HBM technology is heat. According to the report, the most heat is generated in the “logic die” of HBM chips. In such a situation, adopting advanced processing technology will improve energy efficiency and performance. Samsung has decided to use logic wafers based on 4nm and 10nm process for DRAM manufacturing. Along with this, “bumpless hybrid bonding” technology will be introduced for 16-layer stacking.

Market competition:
Through HBM4, Samsung plans to regain the market share lost from HBM3E. There is tough competition from companies like Micron and SK Hynix in the HBM market.

With the adoption of HBM4 technology, it is expected that this technology will prove to be a game-changer in the field of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

Technical experts believe that if Samsung successfully launches the HBM4 chip as promised, it will be a great opportunity for the company to maintain a strong position in the market.

Future Prospects:

With HBM4, Samsung can set new standards in memory technology. This move will not only increase the company’s market share but will also take the competition in the technological field to new heights.

What do the figures say?
The HBM market has seen an annual growth of over 30% in recent years. This new technology from Samsung is likely to accelerate this growth further.
