Qualcomm & Google Plan to Extend Android Support to 8 Years

Qualcomm & Google Plan to Extend Android Support to 8 Years

Qualcomm, in partnership with Google, is extending software support for Android devices to up to eight years, starting with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. This move aims to provide longer Android OS and security updates, benefiting both users and manufacturers.

Qualcomm’s new initiative ensures that Android devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite and future chipsets will receive eight years of Android software and security updates. This program, backed by Google, reduces the need for major modifications to OEM software, making updates more seamless.

Key Highlights of the Program:

  • Up to 8 years of support for Android OS and security updates
  • No major OEM code modifications required for updates
  • Project Treble integration to simplify software maintenance
  • Two Android Common Core (ACK) upgrades for enhanced stability

This program makes it easier for manufacturers to keep devices updated without extensive modifications, ensuring a more consistent user experience.

How OEMs Benefit from the Extended Support

While Qualcomm’s initiative ensures longer support, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) still have the final say in rolling out updates. Through ACK core upgrades, manufacturers can provide security updates for an extended period, even if they don’t offer full Android OS updates.

Why This Matters for OEMs:

  • Lower maintenance costs for device updates
  • Encourages longer device lifespans
  • Keeps older devices relevant in the market

Some manufacturers have already committed to extending support, allowing users to hold onto their devices longer without sacrificing security.

Which Devices Will Get 8 Years of Updates?

The first wave of smartphones benefiting from this plan includes those powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite and Android 15 out of the box. Additionally, this program will apply to the next five generations of Snapdragon chips, including the Snapdragon 8 series and 7 series. However, older Snapdragon chips are not included in this support cycle.

Expected Devices with Extended Updates:

  • Google Pixel 9 (promises 7 years of updates)
  • Samsung Galaxy S25 (also committing to 7 years)

This trend reflects a broader shift in the Android ecosystem, pushing for longer-lasting software support similar to Apple’s model.

A Win for Android Users?

Qualcomm and Google’s extended support cycle is a major step forward in improving Android’s longevity. While OEMs still control the final rollout, users can expect a more extended, secure, and stable Android experience.

As more manufacturers commit to longer update cycles, Android devices will remain relevant for nearly a decade, reducing e-waste and improving long-term value for users.
