At its recent I/O conference, Google announced exciting updates, including a new feature called Quick Share for cars with Android Automotive, also known as Google Built-In. This feature makes it simple to share files like photos, videos, or documents with nearby devices without needing cables.
Quick Share is already popular on Android phones, Windows, and Chrome OS devices. It uses Wi-Fi Direct to transfer files quickly and wirelessly. Google plans to bring this feature to cars with Android Automotive by the end of 2025, making it easier for drivers and passengers to share files on the go. Specific details about how it will work in cars are still under wraps.
To clarify, Android Automotive is different from Android Auto. Android Auto is a system that connects your smartphone to a car’s display, letting you use apps through the car’s screen. It’s like a bridge between your phone and the car. Many car brands support Android Auto.
Android Automotive, however, is a complete operating system built into the car itself. It doesn’t rely on a phone and works independently. Brands like Audi, Volvo, Ford, Renault, Polestar, Nissan, Honda, and Chevrolet use Android Automotive in some of their newer, high-end vehicles. These cars are often called Google Built-In vehicles.
This new Quick Share feature could make driving more connected and convenient, letting you share files seamlessly from your car to other devices. Stay tuned for more updates as Google rolls out this feature later this year.
