PERMIT TECHNICIAN Summary Of Position Performs computerized permitting/licensing work for the Planning/Codes Department. Responsibilities include taking payments, issuing permits and licenses, scheduling inspections, receiving applications and plans, creating reports, and other clerical duties including providing quality customer service in a fast-paced environment.
Examples Of Work
Essential Duties*
- Maintains specialized knowledge relevant to department assignment, for example, technical building permit information and building codes, and utilities information and applications;
- Performs general clerical duties such as: word processing, filing, answering phones and referring calls, preparing correspondence, etc.;
- Sets up contractors and takes payments for licenses along with billing on a regular basis and verifying that all license requirements are being met;
- Receives and accounts for payments and receipts; responsible for cash drawer;
- Takes food establishment license applications;
- Takes and oversees the processing of applications for construction of temporary electric, electric, water, and sewer services;
- Schedules inspections in permitting software;
- Issues permits for building, electric, plumbing, gas, mechanical, sign, garage sale, etc.;
- Explains and interprets building permitting and inspection process to the public, property owners, and contractors;
- Posts and tabulates figures;
- Prepares construction and permitting activity reports;
- Organizes and prepares permit applications, building plans and documents for appropriate routing;
- Performs specific research tasks under supervision;
- Accepts applications and payment for other department fees as needed;
- Observes all safety rules and procedures; and
Other Important Duties*
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
- Overtime may be mandatory during peak work loads.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of: building permitting and inspection process; Energov and Microsoft Office software; contractors licensing and requirements; and standard mathematical and grammatical practices.
Ability to: understand and follow instructions; operate standard office equipment, including computer, scanner, calculator, copier, etc.; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and with the general public; and handle several items at one time accurately during stressful situations.
Acceptable Experience And Training
High school graduation or its equivalent.

Bilingual Proficiency – candidates who are conversational in English/Spanish are preferred
